Qui veleggiarono (500 a.C.) i Greci di Reggio guidati da Micito, a fondare la mitica PIXIS (città, fiume e porto), diventata in seguito Colonia Romana, città cristiana col prestigio della Sede Vescovile, attivo borgo Medievale.
Le vicende storiche accumulano navi romane e pirati saraceni, torri e mura ciclopiche, lapidi e capitelli, colonne e strade intatte con perfetti acciottolati, monete e libri, fatti civili e religiosi, distruzioni e rinascite.
Il paese moderno si distende sulla riva del mare; si inerpica adagio sulle dolci colline, sulle sponde del fiume, si nasconde e si veste di alberi, gode della folta chioma della rugosa e gigantesca memoria dei suoi verdi ulivi.
In alto, sulla collina, l'antica POLIS su cui domina la sdrucita potenza del Castello, l'intricato dialogo dei vicoli, la rassicurante sequela di archi: e tutto sembra proteso ad un incontro nella Piazza Grande, dove spicca tetragono il Campanile e solenne si distende la splendida antica Cattedrale (sec. XI).

In 500 B.C. a band of Greek colonists led by Micito set sail from Reggio and here landed and founded what was to become the legendary settlement of PIXIS (town, river and port), subsequently becoming a Roman colony and later, a thriving medieval community.
The remains of Roman galleys, the vessels of Saracen pirates, towers and massive, fortified walls, tombstones, columns, perfectly paved roads still intact, coins and books and civil and church records recount the history of this place through its cycles of destruction and rebirth.
The town today begins at the seashore and follows the river banks up the gentle wooded hillside in a deep green shade of ancient olive groves.
Above, perched on the hilltop, stands the ancient, original POLIS, over which still towers what remains of the once all-powerful Castle encircled by a network of narrow, connecting arched alleys all seeming to converge on the Piazza Grande, dominated by the foursided tower and the solemn presence of the splendid eleventh-century Cathedral.
